This is how Energy Lab supports pro cycling team Lotto-Soudal during the Tour de France

Testing & Coaching

On the 7th of July, another edition of the Tour de France takes off. Cycling fans are ready, but are the riders? We asked Wim Van Hoolst, Lotto-Soudal’s performance coach at Energy Lab. He explains how he supports the riders and talks about the team’s ambitions for the 105th edition of the Tour.

LOTTO-SOUDAL TEAM SUPPORT

Since 2009, Lotto-Soudal riders have been tested and coached by Energy Lab. “We provide full physical support for the riders”, Wim Van Hoolst explains. “For example, the riders undergo a detailed analysis of their body composition and take fitness tests in the lab or field tests on the road. They also take aerodynamic time trial tests, sweat analysis tests and powerbreathe tests, with which we measure their respiratory strength and tidal volume at rest and during efforts. We determine their maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 Max) and other spirometric data, such as mechanical efficiency and calorimetric data. The latter refers to the energy consumed by the fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Finally, the Energy Lab coaches are in contact with the riders and sports directors on a weekly basis in order to provide them with the best possible support.”Since 2009, Lotto-Soudal riders have been tested and coached by Energy Lab. “We provide full physical support for the riders”, Wim Van Hoolst explains. “For example, the riders undergo a detailed analysis of their body composition and take fitness tests in the lab or field tests on the road. TOUR DE FRANCE

In May, most riders train at high altitude to prepare for the Tour. At that time, they are still training at a low intensity. At the beginning of June, the riders will compete in either the Critérium du Dauphiné or the Tour of Switzerland, followed by the national championships as a final specific preparation for the Tour. Some riders, such as Tiesj Benoot or Tomasz Marczynski, will even return to the Sierra Nevada in June, until right before the championships.

“During the Tour de France I will be present from Sunday the 8th to Tuesday the 10th of July. On Monday the 9th, the team time trial takes place. Together with the sports directors we will draw up the race strategy. This means that we will determine the riders’ positions and make tactical decisions regarding the turns in the time trial,” says Wim Van Hoolst.

“With one top sprinter and four freebooters, we can take a shot at a stage win almost every day.”Wim Van Hoolst, Energy Lab coach

AMBITIONS

“The team performed great in the team time trial in the Critérium du Dauphiné. In the Baloise Belgium Tour, Greipel managed to win two times, Jelle Vanendert won the queen stage and Jens Keukeleire won the general classification. Of course, the Tour is of a different level, but the preparations went well. Starting the Tour with a sprint victory in the first or second stage would be fantastic”, says Wim. “André Greipel certainly has a chance here. Tomasz Marczynski, Thomas De Gendt, Jelle Vanendert and Tiesj Benoot are freebooters. In this Tour they have several chances of competing for a stage win. The stage to Roubaix is also marked in our calendars. Perhaps we could see Jens Keukeleire shining here.”
