When are you better off by bike?

Move

A silly 600 metres. Recent research shows that we are only prepared to take our bike and leave our cars parked for distances less than 600 metres. Yet, a lot of our daily (and weekly) distances can be easily covered by bike. Care to take a guess?

A silly 600 metres. Recent research shows that we are only prepared to take our bike and leave our cars parked for distances less than 600 metres. Today we choose the car for more than half of our trips. Yet, a lot of our daily (and weekly) distances can easily be covered by bike. We’ve summed up some ‘bicycle-ideas’ to inspire you to take your friend-on-2-wheels a bit more:

  • Baker, butcher and groceries A lot of us have a trusted butcher, baker or store near their house. However, we take the car a lot, while hoping we won't be parked closer to our house than to our baker. Take the bike and 'park' next to the entrance. It helps to mount a shopping bag to your bike. That way you always have a place to store your groceries.
  • Lively to work Bring some activity into your commute. Do you live closeby? Choose to go by bike. Do you live further? Take public transport and put a bike near the station or bus stop and travel the last distance by bike. Employees at chemical producer INEOS traded in their cars with pleasure.

  • Start training at the front door Are you truly sporty? Then you don’t take your car to the sports club or to the game, do you? Start your session at the front door and take the bike: it’s the ideal warm-up and cool-down.
  • A worriless night out Going out? Circulation plans, LEZs and a scarcity of parking spots during the weekend … Your appetite to party drops at a quick rate. Luckily cities often provide safe (and mostly covered) bicycle parking stations where there is always a spot for you. Do you like a glass of wine, then the bike is the best choice to get home safely.
  • Boost your biorhythm Feeling under the weather? Relax, destress and expand your mind with a bike ride. You will feel better, guaranteed! Besides, it helps you fall asleep faster. Better sleep means being fitter during the day.
  • With the kids to school Cycling together to school with the kids is not only fun, it makes for activity for you and the kids during busy school- and workdays. The (far too) little parking space at the school gate is one less thing to worry about.
  • Around the block Taking a trip on your bike is the ideal way to discover your neighbourhood (further). It's mostly the areas with less cars that hide the green and beautiful spaces. And you show yourself from your best side by travelling ecologically.

You notice that you don't have to look far for an opportunity to take the bike. Yet, a lot of people don't succeed at making the click. The biggest advantage: you win time. A short trip is often faster by bike than by car. Certainly within the village, where cars clog up all the narrow roads. Win time while working on your health.
